Festina lente

The Norbertine abbey in Tongerlo has been a landmark since 1130. The coat of arms that hangs from the 14th century gateway immediately reveals the priests’ life motto: ‘festina lente’. Its meaning is ‘rush slowly’. Many centuries later, this slogan still applies.

The oast house of Haacht Brewery

Shortly after the start of the First World War, the surroundings of the brewery became the stage of heavy fights. Many people fled, but Eugène de Ro, founder of our brewery, and master brewer Camille Kerkhofs stayed behind. Their goal? To make sure ‘Haecht Brewery and Dairy’ was okay.

Many years ago, a newspaper wrote: “Haacht Brewery’s gigantic chimney can be spotted from afar. I’ve never seen any smoke come out of it, which must mean it hasn’t been used in years.” The journalist drew the wrong conclusion. Because our proud chimney most definitely has a use.
